Sophie Smorczewski is a London-based artist whose practice spans works on paper, oil paintings on canvas and oak, and immersive installation. Attentive to gardens and wider landscapes, she distils transient, intimate encounters with place into images that are inflected by memory and ongoing transformation. Drawing inspiration from ancient tree forms and from artists including Lucy Dodd, she grinds pigments from organic matter, allowing her colours to shift and evolve over time. These mutable surfaces mirror natural cycles of growth, decay and renewal, while her reuse of earlier painted fragments weaves traces of previous works into new compositions. A 2021 graduate of Manchester School of Art and recipient of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art Prize, she is currently undertaking an MFA in Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art.
