Dominika Hofman

Dominika Hofman (b. 1986, Poland) is a painter whose work bridges the traditions of the Old Masters with a distinctly contemporary visual language. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, Faculty of Painting, in 2011. In 2014, she collaborated with Breakthru Films Studio on Loving Vincent—the world’s first fully painted feature film, nominated for an Academy Award. Hofman currently lives and works in Gdynia, Poland. Since then, she has exhibited her work widely in Poland and France, and recently held her first solo exhibition in the United States.

Hofman’s paintings merge realism and surrealism, balancing precise control with intuitive freedom. Her fascination with light, color, and materiality forms the core of her artistic language. She draws inspiration from classical art history and the techniques of the Old Masters, while remaining deeply engaged in experimentation and process. Each canvas evolves unpredictably—beginning with expressive acrylic and spray-painted backgrounds, later refined through layers of oil paint.

Recurring motifs of shells and pearls appear throughout her work, symbolizing transformation, mystery, and feminine strength. Hofman has developed a distinctive method for rendering these forms: applying multiple layers of gesso to create a smooth base, then using thin, translucent glazes to achieve depth, iridescence, and the illusion of movement. This meticulous approach allows her to reveal subtle shifts of light and color that evoke both fragility and resilience.

Through her work, Dominika Hofman continues to explore the intersection of tradition and innovation, creating paintings that invite contemplation and reveal the timeless poetry of light.
